Matt Mizereck of Leon finished first at the District 1-3A championship meet with a time of 15:44. (Special to the Democrat)
Leon, Chiles win district titles
DEMOCRAT STAFF REPORTS • November 9, 2008
PENSACOLA — Leon High won both the boys team and individual championships at the District 1-3A Championships on Saturday.
Leon finished ahead of Pine Forest, Fort Walton Beach and Chiles in overall points. Leon's Matt Mizereck finshed first overall in the boys individual race with teammates Will Stanford in second and Riley Dohergy in third.
Chiles won the girls 1-3A championship also with an individual top-three sweep, as Lily Williams finished first in the individual standings with teammates Carly Thomas Kaia Hampton in second and third, respectively.
"Our kids did what they had to do," Leon coach Andrew Wills said. "It was a good day to run. It was a good team victory, which is good for the seniors. Tey wanted to definitely win districts, so it's a good day.
"I think they're happy with the way they ran. They're pretty much a veteran group. They know they have to get better every week."
Chiles coach Scott Gowan was also pleased.
"We ran well," Gowan said. "Our girls' team ran well, our boys team ran well — we were seeded seventh coming in, and finished third, so our boys had a real good day as well
"The girls have run well all year long. We've had a good group. Now we get to run at home, in Tallahassee where we train. We know the course real well, which should be kind of an advantage.
"I think people kind of doubted us, but we've been pretty good the last few years — three state title and two runner-ups in the last six years. This is the best year our girls have ever had. We just want to keep it going."
Okay, I know, there are some errors in the story. The boys finished fourth. The girls went 1,2,3 4 and Kendall was 4. But, it was a newspaper story and that is good. And it was my first photograph in the newspaper!!! Yes, that's me - "special to the democrat". So you can call me "Special".
